Airport Award For Costain
11 June 2010
Costain, one of London Gatwick Airport's two main construction
partners, has been highly praised by the Considerate Constructors
Scheme, following a recent audit.
Started in 1997, the scheme was established by members of the
industry to improve the image of construction. Membership of the
scheme is voluntary and all participating companies sign up to a
code of practice which includes being considerate on site and a
good neighbour.
Other measures include how contractors manage their
environmental impact, safety, site cleanliness and on-site
facilities for construction workers.
Costain was praised for its work in redeveloping the forecourt
interchange at North Terminal, and was awarded 'very good' site
status.
There was also recognition for the way Costain worked in
partnership with their stakeholders including London Gatwick, its
airlines and handling agents.
Commenting on the awards, Ray Melee, London Gatwick's Project
Director said: "As a major independent airport, we're
investing nearly one billion pounds to modernise Gatwick and
provide a better experience for our passengers. We will do this
with our business partners, safely and responsibly.
"I'm delighted that Taylor Woodrow (Gatwick's other construction
partner) and Costain have been recognised by the Considerate
Contractors scheme. To deliver major construction projects
without impacting the day-to-day operations of the busiest single
runway airport in the world is a major achievement."
Brendan Conlon, Project Director, Costain said: "Costain is
delighted to receive this rating which was the first assessment at
Gatwick under this scheme.
"The interchange project is particularly challenging due to its
location within the heart of the North Terminal. Work has been
carefully planned and managed to avoid impacting on those
organisations that work close to the construction site. The
positive assessment from the Considerate Constructors scheme is
testament to everyone's hard work."
