Bond Street Wins Green Award

10 May 2016

The Bond Street Station Upgrade (BSSU) project has won a Green Apple Built Environment Award.

The project, a joint venture between Costain and Laing O’Rourke on behalf of London Underground Ltd, earned the prize for environmental improvements and sustainable development. It was one of more than 100 nominations for this year’s Green Apple awards, which recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world.

The award is recognition for everyone at the BSSU, said Costain’s Isabel Simpson, Graduate Environmental Advisor.

“We’re constantly striving to minimise our impact on the environment, natural resources, and climate change. We’ve set up initiatives such as a bespoke water treatment system to reuse water on site, and sensored lighting that prevents electricity wastage. We have also created a herb and vegetable garden using recycled materials, and more than 99% of our waste is diverted from landfill including clay we send to help build the RSPB’s Wallasea Island nature reserve.

“Sustainable means of construction are undertaken wherever possible; we’re always aiming to lower our carbon footprint and have successfully implemented several innovations. As well as the concrete washout system that allows water reuse, we also use electric plant to reduce fuel usage and cut particulates. And bringing in acoustic barrier walls and SoundEar devices to visually communicate noise limits has helped us build excellent relationships with local stakeholders and independent regulators.”

Added Isabel: “I’d like to thank everyone involved with the project for their continued help and support in keeping BSSU environmentally sustainable.”

The BSSU team is now looking forward to find out if it has won a bronze, silver or gold award at the presentation ceremony at The Crystal – the world’s most sustainable events venue – in London in August.

The project has also been invited to have its winning paper published in The Green Book, a leading international work of reference on environmental best practice, so that others around the world can follow its example and learn from its achievements.

* The BSSU project is a great example of Costain’s ‘Engineering A Sustainable Tomorrow' strategy in action.

‘Engineering A Sustainable Tomorrow’ is the next phase of our Costain Cares commitment to build a sustainable business and is based on our four sustainability goals:

- Ensuring Costain is a safe and great place to work,
- Creating a better environment,
- Supporting our local communities and leaving a positive lasting legacy,
- Providing better solutions for the marketplace.
