Considerate And 'Golden'

20 May 2015

Costain has turned in another golden performance at this year’s Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) awards.

The Company won no fewer than eight Gold Awards, with one, the 4Delivery Portsmouth Flood Alleviation Scheme also being one of the runners-up to the Most Considerate Site of 2015. “This has been an exemplary site which has been a pleasure to monitor,” said the CCS.

Judges also cited the Portsmouth site’s ‘particularly strong dialogue with four local schools’, plus safety systems and worker welfare standards ‘at the forefront of industry best practice’.

Costain also took six Silver and three Bronze titles, as staff on sites around the country demonstrated their commitment to minimising disruption to the communities around their workplaces.

“We never fail to be impressed each year by the high levels of innovation and excellence evidenced throughout the industry,” said CCS Chairman, Mike Petter.

“Each award-winning project serves as a shining example to the industry as to what can be achieved across a range of different sized projects and in all sectors. My congratulations to all sites that have received a National Site Award.”

Remarkably, no fewer than five Crossrail sites won Gold Awards.

Among them, the shaft being dug for the Crossrail tunnel at Eleanor Street in London’s East End, had to employ “the utmost sensitivity” in the movement of a group of travellers to a new location. “This was achieved to the very highest degree, with a valuable dialogue created from the outset and detailed attention paid to the needs of the travelling community,” noted the judges.

Among other Gold sites was the A244 Walton Bridge Replacement, the first new road crossing across the River Thames for more than 20 years.

“The project maintained exceptional standards, despite the additional difficulties of major flood threats and unavoidable road disruption,” commented the judges. “Community engagement was at benchmark levels, with the site team becoming valued partners in achieving the least possible inconvenience to the public.”
