Costain Awarded Further Highways Agency Motorway Upgrade Contracts

11 September 2014

Costain, the engineering solutions provider, is pleased to confirm the award of two new Smart Motorway Scheme contracts under the Highways Agency’s Major Projects Framework, on which Costain is a long term partner. The two schemes on the M1 are together worth a total of approximately £125 million to Costain.

Smart Motorways ease and expedite traffic flow by converting the hard shoulder to a running lane, and using new technology to vary speed limits in response to driving conditions. The two schemes (M1 J28 – 31 and M1 J32 – 35a) are adjacent to each other and by undertaking both projects Costain will be able to effectively manage road space between them and reduce disruption to road users. The work follows on from the central reserve barrier replacement work which is already underway on these sections of the M1.

Work will commence immediately and complete in early 2017.

Darren James, Managing Director of Costain Infrastructure, commented:

“Costain provides innovative, technology led solutions to address major national infrastructure needs, and we are delighted to have been awarded these further significant contracts by the Highways Agency, reinforcing our position as a long-term partner of choice.”
