Costain Awarded Gas Terminal FEED Study For Perenco

28 March 2013

Costain has been awarded a front end engineering design (FEED) package by Perenco UK for the replacement of the gas refrigeration plant at its Dimlington Gas Terminal.

The terminal uses refrigeration units to chill gas to remove water and hydrocarbon liquids to ensure that the processed gas meets the required specification for the National Gas Transmission System. The units currently use a refrigerant which is due to be phased out by the end of 2014 under EU and UK Law resulting from the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

Costain has previously reviewed in collaboration with Perenco UK the technology options to replace the refrigerant and has identified the optimal solution for the Dimlington asset. Perenco UK has now awarded a further contract to develop this approach to a stage which will allow a detailed engineering, procurement and construction contract to be bid.

The Dimlington Gas Terminal is a strategic national asset that ensures the security of the UK’s gas supply by processing gas from more than 20 offshore fields in the Southern North Sea and has recently been added to PERENCO’s portfolio of UK Assets.

Bob Price, Perenco UK Project & Developments Manager said: “Perenco UK look forward to continuing the working relationship with Costain after a successful Project Re-Appraisal period. Costain Natural Resources’ positive approach to working closely with Perenco and their capabilities have resulted in a substantial reduction in scope and cost for the Project compared to that produced by the previous Asset Owners. The novel bespoke solution has been a testament to the strengths of both Company’s knowledge and expertise and a desire to produce enhanced Environmental and Business results”.

Mark Rogerson, Costain’s Natural Resources Division Managing Director, added: “We are delighted to be working with Perenco on this important project and we will work together to deliver a successful and sustainable solution for the refrigeration replacement programme. Our team will bring industry-leading front end engineering experience coupled with full lifecycle capability from recent brownfield projects.”
