Costain Recognised At Considerate Constructors Scheme Awards 2011

1 June 2011

Costain was recognised at the Considerate Constructors Scheme 2011 National Site Awards in April, by winning 16 awards including Most Considerate Site 2011 Runner Up in the Gold Award category for the Bell Common Tunnel Refurbishment Works.

The awards recognise outstanding consideration towards work force, neighbours and the environment, with the sites chosen from approximately 8,500 eligible projects.

The awards are only given to the highest scoring 7.5 per cent of sites in the scheme.

Accepting the award at a ceremony at the Plaisterers’ Hall in London for the Bell Common Refurbishment Works, Andy Firth, the Project Manager, said working on other projects gave his team invaluable experience in understanding what the Scheme were looking for.

“We are delighted to receive the award, which reflected the efforts of the entire team and our commitment to our workforce and the wider community. It also showed the continuous improvement of the team who worked on the M25 Homesdale and M27 projects,” said Andy.

As well as winning the Runner Up award for Bell Common, the Highways sector won three other awards, including two Bronzes for the Church Village Bypass for Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council and the A34 Wolvercote Viaduct Replacement, and one Silver for the M1 J10-13 Improvement Scheme with joint venture partner Carillion.

In the Water Sector, the 4D Delivery Ltd team, a Costain joint venture with Veolia Water Technologies and Solutions and MWH, won five awards, including two for the Cleaner seas for Sussex scheme, and one each for the Eastney Pumping Station, Ashford Growth and Twyford Water Supply works.

Also in the Water Sector, the Stream Three joint venture, which comprises Costain and Veolia Water Technologies and Solutions, won Bronze for the Mersey Valley Processing Centre at Shell Green for United Utilities.

In the Waste Sector, the Riverside Resource Recovery Facility at Belvedere in Kent won Bronze and Silver for their work, and the Bredbury site team won Silver for their work at the Greater Manchester Recycling and Waste Contract at Bredbury Parkway for Viridor Laing (Greater Manchester) Ltd.

The Education Sector won two Silver awards for their work on two schools for Integrated Bradford Ltd, the Grange Technology College and the Greenhead & Beechcliffe School.

A range of factors are taken into consideration before an award is given, including how the site is managed by the company and contractors, how clean, safe and environmentally responsible it is, whether it is respectful and considerate to its neighbours and how responsible and accountable it is.

Any registered site is eligible to win an award providing the site, or registered phase of it, has been completed. An independent panel reviews all eligible sites and decides whether a site has reached the standard required.

Approximately 3,000 guests attended a total of 11 lunch ceremonies held in Edinburgh, Manchester and London, where the awards were presented.
