Costain Skanska JV Wins £40m Paddington Underground Link Contract

14 January 2015

Costain, the engineering solutions provider, in joint venture (JV) with Skanska UK, has won the contract to create an underground link between Paddington Station’s Crossrail and Bakerloo Line platforms for London Underground Limited (LUL). The contract is worth approximately £20m to the Costain Group.

The 125m-long tunnelled link will also incorporate two escalators and a lift and will alleviate congestion, whilst minimising the interchange time between Crossrail and Bakerloo Line.

Work will commence immediately with the Design Development phase, to which the JV was appointed as part of LUL’s “Innovative Contractor Engagement” procurement process, by which LUL aims to strengthen its relationships with its suppliers and get the benefits of early supplier involvement in the design of major projects. Construction is scheduled to commence in September 2015, with the new link handed over in August 2018, and final completion in December 2018.

Darren James, Managing Director for Infrastructure at Costain, commented:

“I am delighted with this important award from LUL. It is Costain’s thirteenth contract on the Crossrail project, in line with our strategy of forming long-term working relationships with major customers which are meeting essential UK infrastructure needs.

“This award also demonstrates the increasingly multi-disciplined nature of our customer relationships, in this case combining innovative design solutions and specialist design with complex project delivery. It contributes to a high quality order book comprising over 90% repeat business.”
