Five Star Nuclear Performance

9 July 2012

Costain has turned in another five-star performance at the Hinkley Point nuclear site in Somerset, with its new catering facility receiving the highest rating attainable from the West Somerset Council Environmental Health Department (EH).

Costain’s Infrastructure Support Services (formerly Promanex) is on site providing catering services on both the Hinkley Point A site, which is being decommissioned, and Hinkley Point C, due to be the first of a new generation of nuclear power stations. At ‘A’, it also provides a range of services ranging from cleaning and gardening to management of the site’s fire services. The C site is owned by power generator EDF Energy Ltd.

The ‘A’ site has had a five-star rating for at least five years, but the new catering facility won the top ranking in its first assessment after only opening for business in April.

“The EH rates it on the safety aspects of how it’s set up,” explained Dave Sutton, Site Manager with Costain Infrastructure Support Services.

“The inspector bases the inspection on a system known as HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control points), which is a method of measuring and recording every step from the purchasing to serving of food.  At each step you have measurement of safety, for example, checking temperatures in storage areas.

“This is a testament to the knowledge of the catering teams on both sites that these excellent results are achieved.”

As Dave put it when relaying the news of the latest success: “Slightly pleased!!!”
