Google ‘First’ For Graduate

5 March 2015

Costain’s Mohammed Shah has become the first person from the construction industry to graduate from an award-winning online digital marketing course developed with Google.

Mohammed, a Graduate Performance Improvement Manager, was also one of a select group who won a scholarship for the six-month programme. As a result, he received a fully-funded place on the Squared Online digital marketing course.

“I’m a firm believer in personal development and am always looking for opportunities to increase my learning,” said Mohammed, who joined Costain in 2012 after graduating in quantity surveying. “The scholarship was available to graduates who were not employed in marketing, but were entrepreneurial thinkers keen to find out more about the digital world.”

The course not only helps candidates understand the technology and how to use it, but also shows them how to lead and manage teams to execute ideas efficiently. It comprises five modules on subjects such as understanding social consumers, developing digital campaigns and getting to grips with tools like Google Analytics. Students attended weekly live classes from expert tutors and high profile speakers such as heads of large companies and technology experts. They also took part in live online discussions and collaborated in virtual teams to work on projects. To gain the certificate at the end of the course, students had to pass each module and have a participation level of 90%.

All the hard work was well worthwhile and is now proving useful at work, says Mohammed. “Now I know how valuable social media can be when you want your audience to know what you are doing. For example, I’ve just put together a video to advertise the Highways Improvement Team – the team I am working full time within – and am also helping to market a course designed to help Costain employees develop innovative ideas.”

He’s now focussing on doing a master’s degree and continues to look for other opportunities to learn: “I believe you should always try and widen your knowledge - I’m always keen to offer more than just what I do in my day job.”
