Health And Safety Award At Bond Street

The Costain Skanska joint venture (CSJV) team working on the new Bond Street station for Crossrail has been awarded “Inspirational” status in Crossrail’s Gateway Health and Safety scheme, a first for a contractor working on the new £15billion rail link.

Gateway is a bespoke health and safety scheme Crossrail brought in a year ago under its Target Zero – A State of Mind initiative, which aims to deliver a world class health and safety standard across the entire programme, protecting the work environment and keeping everyone safe.

Gateway measures and celebrates the health and safety performance of its contractors. Each company is marked under six major pillars which include Leadership and Behaviour; Communication; Designing for Health and Safety; Workplace Health; Workplace Safety and Performance Improvement. Assessed every four months, a total of 21 contractors were appraised in the most recent round, so to be the first team to attain “Inspirational” status is a major achievement.

“We are delighted to have achieved success in the latest round of Crossrail’s Gateway Scheme. It came as a result of a team effort at Bond Street where everyone has a voice and everyone is empowered to ensure safety is number one. We have a project environment where seeking alternative, safer and innovative ways of working is actively encouraged,” said Claire Carr, the Costain Project Manager at Bond Street.

Commenting on the team’s performance, Hamza Shuaib, the Health and Safety specialist who led the Gateway assessments on behalf of Crossrail, said: “The CSJV team at Bond Street has consistently excelled at communicating health and safety.  Their ability to continually devise innovative ways to improve and raise the bar in all six Target Zero pillars over the past three cycles of Gateway demonstrates their commitment to ensuring that all on the project go home unharmed every day.  The team at Bond Street is inspirational and truly deserves this accolade.”

The fundamental principles of the Gateway Scheme, which aims to empower people to make the right decisions, is similar to Costain’s own highly successful health and safety programme, Costain Behavioural Safety (CBS), which is now being applied in a wider behavioural management and leadership programme across all aspects of its business.
