Heysham To M6 'Welly Walk' For 150 Challenge

21 April 2015

Costain and St John’s Hospice in Lancaster have organised a 'Welly Walk' along the Heysham to M6 Link Road, giving local residents the opportunity to be the first to walk along the new three-mile route, in aid of the *150 Challenge.

The event will be held on Sunday April 26 at 2pm, starting at Lancaster and Morecambe College. Support for the event has grown in recent weeks, with over 2,500 people signed up for the walk, while the project’s Twitter account (@heysham_link) has over 1,400 followers.

The Heysham to M6 Link Road is a major transport project in Lancaster, connecting the Heysham and Morecambe peninsula to Junction 34 of the M6, providing better access for residents, businesses and tourists to the area. The project includes a new 4.8km dual carriageway with a footpath and cycleway along the entire route.

“The link road has been at the forefront of the local community for many years and it has been one of the main topics of conversation for many local people. The community engagement with local residents in the area has been fantastic and we thought a 'Welly Walk' presented a great opportunity to show our support and raise money for both St John’s Hospice and the Costain 150 Foundation,” said Caroline MacPhee, Costain’s Office Manager working on the project.

Caroline added: “It’s also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the local community to walk the length of the new road before it’s filled with vehicles, and to see first-hand what we’ve been doing.”

Tickets cost £10 for adults, £7.50 children and £30 for a family of five (maximum two adults). All tickets include a muffin and a hot drink as well as return coach travel back to the college.

Children also receive a goody bag and a free high vis vest. All proceeds will go to the hospice and Costain’s 150 Challenge.
