Milestones Achieved For Waste Project

22 July 2009

Costain has achieved a number of key milestones on the *Riverside Resource Recovery Ltd, Energy from Waste Facility Project in London.

The Flue Gas Treatment area, Stack Foundation and Air Cooled Condensing areas have been handed over on time to VonRoll, the EPC contractor. A further key milestone was achieved this month when the Boiler/Incinerator line 1 area was released to VonRoll, on programme, for their critical process equipment installation. Lines 2 and 3 have quickly followed.

VonRoll's Civil and Building Manager Arthur Green said:

"VonRoll would like to complement the entire Costain team for their efforts to date in making this a successful project for all of us."

In addition there has also been a Safety Milestone of One Million man hours worked without a reportable accident and a zero AFR (Accident Frequency Rate) for 2009.

Francois Charriere the VonRoll Project Director added:

"Despite the worst winter for nearly 20 years and the daily challenges of such projects, the project is on time and the close cooperation between VonRoll Inova and Costain allows an efficient project execution."

* For the project, Costain is providing design, site infrastructure and building works for the main building, jetties, roads and offices. Overall investment in the project is seen at £350million. The completed facility will be able to process up to 585,000 tonnes of London's residual waste from 2011 and will be able to generate electricity for 66,000 homes.

The new facility will enable the majority of the waste to be transported by river in place of upwards of approximately 100,000 lorry trips per annum.
