Ministerial Visit To Manchester

20 November 2014

Costain recently welcomed Matthew Hancock MP, the Business and Enterprise Minister and the Minister of State for Energy, to its Manchester office.

The Minister visited the new Engineering Centre to see the innovative technology being developed in-house and to meet members of Costain’s engineering team. The Minister also got to see the new Innovation Suite, which contains the latest audio-visual technology such as projection systems and an Interactive Feature Wall.

Mr Hancock met Derick Roylance, Costain’s Head of Technical Systems, who gave a demonstration on E3D, the next generation in 3D modelling software, while Bryony Livesey, Technology Director, explained how Costain is developing new technologies as part of its commitment to research and development.

The Minister also spoke to Matt Nadin, the Sir Albert Costain Trainee of the Year, who has just completed his apprenticeship. Matt told the Minister about his experience as an Apprentice Designer at Costain and showed the Minister the 3D models he has developed.

The Front End Solutions team showed Mr Hancock some of the leading-edge work Costain is undertaking in Nuclear and Oil & Gas. The team included five members of staff who were shortlisted at the IChemE Global Awards 2014 earlier this month, including Ijeoma Ifedi, a Senior Process Engineer, who won ‘Young Process Engineer of the Year’.

Commenting on the visit, the Minister said: “For UK engineering to grow and compete on the world stage we need to ensure the supply of highly skilled and talented engineers. That’s why we are joining forces with the industry to inspire and develop the workforce of the future. I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit Costain and to meet the young engineers that will power the industry in the years to come.”

Alex Vaughan, Managing Director for the Natural Resources Division, added: “We were delighted to welcome the Minister to our new office in Manchester, and for the opportunity to showcase the depth of talent in the Company and the industry-leading innovations we are developing to meet the country’s national needs.”
