On The Right Track For Training

19 February 2015

Costain’s rail sector has developed an innovative training scheme to equip civil engineering focussed trades for the transition to working on the railway.

The training programme has been successfully trialled with ABC Electrification Limited (a Costain, Alstom and Babcock business joint venture) who are delivering electrification programmes in Scotland, Wales, the Midlands and Great Western Regions.

The training covers all aspects of the railway, including a comprehensive introduction, technical information and how to work safely. Following the successful trial, the programme will be made available to joint venture partners, the supply chain and customers. The training acknowledges change in the industry and our measures taken to meet customer expectations.

“Rail is an exciting and challenging place to work. This course provides the fundamental knowledge and tools to ensure a smooth and efficient transition that will benefit both the individuals and our customers,” explains Rail Systems Director, Paul Williams.

Costain has a target to roll out the training to the whole of its rail sector by the end of the current financial year. With this greater knowledge base Gren Edwards, Costain Rail Director, believes “an informed workforce is a safer and more productive workforce, and this is critical to a developing organisation. It is part of our sustainability programme that allows us to leverage the skills from across our other sectors such as Nuclear, Highways, Water and Oil & Gas into the modern railway environment, and addressing any in house skills shortages the industry may face. ”
