Pioneering Role In Oil And Gas

Leading UK engineering solutions provider, Costain, is involved in a project which the Oil and Gas Authority has recently lauded as “significant” for the future of the UK continental shelf.

Costain has worked closely with Hurricane Energy, the UK-based oil and gas company focused on hydrocarbon resources in naturally fractured basement reservoirs, to produce a number of field development options for their Lancaster Discovery, West of Shetland. Globally, naturally fractured basement reservoirs are prolific oil producers, but they represent a new opportunity for the UKCS.

Over the last 24 months the Costain team, in collaboration with Hurricane, has refined these original concepts to define an initial development concept based around an Early Production System (EPS). The primary objectives of the EPS are to gain additional knowledge of the reservoir and minimise capital exposure, whilst providing an economic return on the capital invested.

The EPS concept takes into account the current low oil price environment which has necessitated the development of novel solutions and cost saving initiatives. Commenting on the Company’s fundamental role in the Lancaster Development, Peter Kirkbride, Costain’s Senior Account Manager, said: “Costain is very pleased to be working closely with Hurricane on development of the Lancaster fractured basement reservoir; it offers amazing potential for the UKCS.

“Costain’s evaluation work has played a significant role in the decision to implement an Early Production System on the Lancaster field, which will drive the progression of this innovative project and not only allow for a true understanding of reservoir performance but – critically – will also deliver an economic return on investment so far.”

Neil Platt, Chief Operations Officer of Hurricane Energy, said: “We are delighted with the performance of Costain to date and look forward to working together in the same collaborative manner the future.”

Costain’s capabilities extend across design and consultancy, project management, delivery and operations and maintenance in the energy sector. The company's philosophy is to provide innovative and commercially attractive solutions to many of the challenges faced across a range of sectors.
