Safety Milestone In Power

Safety Milestone In Power

15 October 2015

Costain’s Power Sector has notched up a major safety milestone, achieving in excess of one million man-hours without a single lost time accident or incident.

The milestone was achieved between February and September 2015 in a sector which works right across the UK, in areas as diverse as maintenance activities on coal fired power stations, high voltage transmission and distribution refurbishments, and large scale tunnelling and construction activities.

Lost Time Accidents, or LTAs, are defined as an incident arising from day-to-day operations, which lead to an injury where the employee has time off following the incident.

Paul Harrington, Power Sector SHE Manager, attributed the safety performance in part to Costain Behavioural Safety (CBS), the Company’s own Behavioural Management programme, which is employed on all of Costain’s projects.

“We continually strive to embed CBS in the Power Sector, with the aim of creating an environment where people do the right thing because they want to. Through CBS we can develop leaders who understand the impact of their own behaviours, learn the behavioural science and apply it to what they do,” said Paul.

Nigel Curry, Costain’s Power Sector Director, added: “The safety of our team is an absolute priority and that means fostering the right behaviours at all levels of the business. I am pleased that the team has achieved this milestone, especially in light of the varied work we undertake across the sector. We should all be incredibly proud of this achievement, which underpins our ambition for the highest levels of SHE performance.”
