Success At First NCE 100 Awards

16 May 2016

Costain has made a strong showing in the first New Civil Engineer 100 Companies of the Year Awards, a new awards scheme that showcases the best companies in civil engineering.

Costain finished eighth in the list of 100 companies judged to have earned a place in the NCE100, making it the highest-ranking contractor. It also won the Technical Excellence and Talent Champion awards, and made the final shortlist for Technology Champion, Technology Trailblazer and Collaborative Firm Of The Year awards.

The judges for the Technical Excellence award were highly impressed by Costain’s Materials for Life (M4L) research into self-healing concrete. It revealed “an outstanding commitment to a core materials issue at the heart of civil engineering,” and “Costain showed genuine innovation and a commitment to invest in improving things for the good of everyone.” The judges also liked Costain’s sincere partnering ethos: “Even if the results eventually give rise to marketable products for specific uses, the contractor is willing to share and publish its research findings.”

Costain also won the Talent Champion award with a strong submission that included its graduate recruitment and apprentice programmes, as well as talent reviews.

Tim Bowen, Costain corporate development director, commented: “We are absolutely delighted that the hard work and professional approach adopted by our HR and Technical and Innovation teams has been recognised by these industry leading awards.

“They reinforce Costain’s leading position in the industry and also the fact that our teams are delivering on our strategic objectives with pace. Congratulations and thanks to everyone for all their efforts.”

The 100 companies making the up the NCE100 were revealed at a gala dinner in London on 11 May. The selection process included an in-depth company survey, employee satisfaction survey and ratification by a dozen leading clients among a 30-strong judging panel. All 100 were assessed against their approaches to technical excellence; pushing technology; being diverse and great and safe places to work; developing future-fit skills; and playing a role in tackling global issues.

“These are the companies that we believe you will want to work for and work with,” said New Civil Engineer’s Mark Hansford. “They are the ones who are moving the industry forward and making it great: great to work for, great to work with and great ambassadors for our profession.”
