Delivering long term gas compression solutions through framework agreements

As part of the Engineering, Construction and Project Support (ECAPS) term services agreement, Costain provided Front End Engineering Design (FEED) and Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Project Management (EPCm) support to Centrica’s Morecambe Bay assets. This agreement covered their North and South Morecambe Terminals in Barrow-in-Furness, two of the UK’s strategically important gas processing terminals. 

As part of the ECAPS framework we provided FEED and EPCm support for the supply of an additional compression stage to the North Morecambe Terminal to combat falling reservoir pressure. We engineered and implemented modifications to the existing field gas compressor during terminal shutdowns to allow us to add a second compressor casing onto a common shaft connecting to the existing gas turbine driver.

In addition to supplying the additional compression we also assessed gas turbines utilised by Centrica on their Barrow assets against HSE Guidance Note PM84 and implemented the required modifications to ensure compliance. As part of ECAPS we also designed new and verified existing Instrument Protective Functions and carried out retrospective SIL and LOPA analysis to ensure Centrica’s compliance with IEC61508/11.
