About Gary

With over 30 years’ leadership experience in engineering both in the public and private sectors, Gary is an expert in navigating complex organisations to really understand clients’ needs. He is experienced in rapidly converting board-level strategy into effective business operations and benefits and uses his multi-disciplinary engineering and P3M expertise to deliver successful, risk-controlled business objectives. He is also a strong advocate of behavioural science and how shaping the environment to promote and embed the right behaviours will deliver the right result.

How leadership behaviours shape successful outcomes

Gary was a Royal Engineer in the Army and served for almost 30 years, leading organisations up to regiment-level, adapting behaviour, shaping culture, adjusting to rapid changes in defence as well as to society’s expectations of the military. This experience was well matched to the world of consultancy and to the kind of client and stakeholder engagement needed to build valued relationships.

As an advocate of the practice of behavioural science, he believes the strength of Costain’s approach to behavioural consultancy is simplicity – it is the consistent and early application of simple tools and techniques that create and sustain lasting change within a client organisation.

Why Gary believes strong foundations are key for developing at pace

Costain’s role is supporting the UK’s defence infrastructure and equipment programmes to enable industry and the military services to generate the military capabilities that defend and secure the nation, deterring threats and keeping people safe.

In his role, Gary is responsible for understanding our clients, knowing what’s happening in the defence market and why. This enables us to help defence clients strengthen the foundations of successful delivery: improving forecast accuracy, schedule adherence, availability and cost efficiency in the major platform and infrastructure investments while increasing pace, agility and responsiveness.
