Tony on the role of energy on the road to net-zero
To realise the necessary reductions to achieve the UK target, a whole systems approach is required. This includes advances in digitisation, integrated planning, the concerns of consumers and the critical role that CCUS, hydrogen and nuclear (in particular AMRs/SMRs) will play.
A change in consumer behaviour will drive demand. Electrification will be key to emission reductions, but low-carbon fuels will also become more dominant as demand grows. Existing infrastructure will require urgent investment in technology such as CCUS, low carbon gas and the retrofitting to existing buildings and facilities.
At Costain we are actively engaged in the drive towards net-zero. With a position across the energy market, and as a champion of innovation, Tony believes he's well placed to support clients in the optimisation of existing and future infrastructure to drive decarbonisation.
Why Tony is committed to supporting others in the industry
As a CEng Assessor for the IET and a mentor to SMEs and individuals, Tony is passionate about giving his time to develop others. Based on his career, he has practical technical and business experience to advise and develop others as well as having access to a network of industry stakeholders to support, motivate and empower individuals to achieve personal and business goals.
Tony describes mentoring as a ‘two-way street’. Having the ability to step back and see the bigger picture is critical to being able to offer any advice that is clear and sound. Encouraging, being supportive and inspiring people to trust their instincts is one of the most important roles he plays. Reminding people of their good qualities, guiding people to be kind, confident and to take responsibility also helps him to continue to strive for higher standards. “Seeing people succeed is the most rewarding aspect of my job”.
