About the joint venture
SCS Railways brings together an industry-leading combination of tried, tested and successful partnerships, world-wide high-speed rail experience and extensive national and regional knowledge.
HS2 is a state-of-the-art, high-speed line critical for the UK’s low carbon transport future. It will provide much-needed rail capacity across the country, and is integral to rail projects in the North and Midlands – helping rebalance the UK economy.
SCS are working together to deliver HS2 along the final 26.4km of HS2’s journey to its southern terminus in Euston. The JV will complete challenging works taking the railway from Northolt to Euston via Old Oak Common, building a variety of structures requiring expert precision and care. As 95% (21km) of the route will be in tunnel, SCS will be running seven tunnel boring machines (TBMs), of which five will operate simultaneously.
The future of work is changing and so are peoples’ expectations of their workplace. SCS is made of diverse talent from different backgrounds and we are committed to building a culture that’s inclusive to empower all of our people to thrive.
Our culture
We know that employees from all functions and levels of seniority deal with Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) issues on a regular basis and need tools to support them to do this confidently. Our EDI team run a monthly Toolbox Talk across the project to focus on a specific EDI issue and equip people with the tools to understand and respond to issues in their jobs. Topics that have been covered include; Black Lives Matter, International Women in Engineering Day, Disability History month and LGBT+ Pride. The chosen topics often respond to a real issue that has been experienced on the project, and serve as regular reminders to sustain positive behaviors over time. These Toolbox Talks upskill staff to handle EDI challenges successfully and are often co-delivered with members of our leadership team or EDI champions which contributes to building the inclusive culture we are committed to creating within SCS.
Our project is home to four staff networks:
• Female advocates in infrastructure and rail (FAIR)
• LGBT+ and allies
• Race network
• Carers network
Each network has specific objectives tailored to its membership, but all share the aim of providing a sense of community, supporting diverse talent and raising awareness of diversity issue to help create a genuinely inclusive culture.
Last year SCS has achieved the Disability Confident Leadership certification, the only HS2 tier one contractor to do so. We have been listed amongst the Times Top 50 Employers for Women List. Our Diversity and Inclusion work has been further recognised through the Diversity and Inclusion Project of the Year Award from the British Construction Industry; Best EDI project Award by the Railway Industry Association; Employers Network for Equality & Inclusion (ENEI) – Inclusive Culture: Highly Commended and we were shortlisted for the Women in Rail 2020 Award. While are very proud of being externally recognised for our efforts, we continue to work and to be ambitious about strengthening the diversity and inclusive culture of the project.
