The Times Top 50 Employers for Women list is published annually in partnership with Business in the Community and alphabetically lists UK employers that have taken significant action to create inclusive workplace cultures and address gender imbalance in the workplace. The evaluation includes appraising the role of senior leaders in promoting gender balance within their organisation; actions to increase representation of women in senior positions and ensure gender balance at all levels; recruitment; progression; intersectionality; supporting parents and carers; bullying and harassment; pay processes; and external engagement to promote gender equality outside their organisation.

BITC’s Gender Equality Campaign Director Charlotte Woodworth explains “Business in the Community’s Times Top 50 Employers for Women list is the longest running and most widely respected award for employers committed to achieving equality for women at work. This year marks ten years of the awards, and the bar was especially high. A decade of expertise and experience underpins Business In the Community’s assessment, which sees organisations reviewed across a wide range of areas including transparency around pay practices, family friendly policies and to what extent the gender equality agenda is embedded into wider strategy”.

Catherine Warbrick, Group HR director, Costain, said “We are proud that our actions to make Costain a great place for women to work has been recognised once again. Having previously been included on the list in 2018 and 2019, our presence in the list was by no means guaranteed in 2020. As more and more companies realise the value of diversity to the success of their business, the actions required to ensure we are continually improving and having an impact are constantly evolving and requiring a continued concerted effort to drive improvement. Whilst the evaluation process focuses on gender balance within our business, we believe that it is a strong indicator of our commitment to make Costain a great place to work for everyone”.
