Costain launches new Sustainability Strategy

14 March 2016

The Costain Group this week launched its new Sustainability Strategy which will help shape the future of the Company.

The strategy brings together the 'Engineering Tomorrow' business strategy and 'Costain Cares' (values, behaviours and corporate responsibility) into 'Engineering a Sustainable Tomorrow'. The strategy is based on Costain’s four sustainability goals: ensuring Costain is a safe and great place to work; creating a better environment; supporting local communities and leaving a positive lasting legacy; and finally, providing better solutions for the marketplace.

Costain’s Sustainability Strategy is based on extensive stakeholder engagement and sets out a range of ambitious targets, which the Company will strive to achieve by 2025.

These targets cover all areas of the business and include, amongst others, a commitment to health and safety, enhancing biodiversity, reducing carbon emissions, generating local social value and promoting greater collaboration and innovation throughout the Company’s supply chain.

The business case for embracing a sustainability strategy is compelling. Costain’s customers place great emphasis on the "good citizen" credentials of their supply chain partners. Given the profile of their businesses and the nature of their activities, embracing social and corporate responsibility and generating long-term value is just as important as how Costain delivers its services. Increasingly, customers insist that their tier-one providers share their corporate and social responsibility values and failure to embrace this means non-qualification for tender lists.

In total, the Company has outlined 17 material issues that are essential to its success, as well as being of significant importance to its stakeholders.

Catherine Warbrick added:
“We have listened to our stakeholders, analysed our own business and studied our industry sectors to identify the issues that matter. This strategy brings together our commitment to build a more sustainable business and to leave a lasting legacy.”

Andrew Wyllie said:

We will continue to promote responsible business practice and challenge norms to confirm Costain's position as an industry leading sustainable business. This is how we plan to ensure sustainability and further demonstrate our long term commitment that 'Costain Cares'."
