Costain Organises Science Competition

24 January 2012

Secondary Schools in West Cumbria have the chance to win £1,000 towards education costs thanks to local employer, Costain.

A competition, which is being organised by Costain and sponsored by the Whitehaven News, will be judged during Science & Engineering week from 9 - 18 March 2012. Costain has made the announcement only weeks after pledging £10,000 to the West Cumbria Community via the Cumbria Community Foundation. With a further commitment of £5,000 for every year the Group works within the area.

The competition is being organised as part of Science & Engineering week, an annual celebration, with events taking place in schools up and down the Country.

Secondary schools are invited to enter the competition for a chance to win £1,000 by building a model bridge using only household products such as tin cans, toilet roll tubes and cereal boxes. The bridge needs to be built to the specifications in the competition pack.

Judges will be taking into account the bridges' design, the materials used and whether it meets the build specifications.

A spokesperson for Costain said: “This is a great opportunity for schools in the area and a good way to celebrate Science & Engineering week.”

If your school is interested in taking part, you can request a competition pack by emailing [email protected] or calling 01946 729052.
