Costain Presents At Madrid Conference

28 October 2014

Costain made its mark at this year’s conference of the Gas Processors Association Europe (GPAE) held in Madrid.

Adam Jones, Process Engineer, Adrian Finn, FES (Front End Solutions) Process Technology Manager, and Robert Pitman, Business Development Manager, Oil & Gas, all from Costain’s Natural Resources Division, were among attendees at the two-day event. They joined customers, suppliers and competitors from the worldwide gas processing industry.

Adrian presented a paper entitled 'Processing of Carbon Dioxide Rich Gas', in which he reviewed low temperature fractionation technologies for processing carbon dioxide rich gas. The paper also considered the merits of using the extracted carbon dioxide for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), and the effect of Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) extraction requirements and increasing carbon dioxide levels in the unit feed gas on process technology selection. The paper also looked at process technology developments to optimise the processing of associated gas from carbon dioxide EOR projects.

A further day-and-a-half of technical papers was presented on the subject of gas treatment processes, with a strong emphasis on the removal of carbon dioxide.

The conference organizers invited Adam to chair a Young Professionals training session on the simulation of gas sweetening processes. Held in association with software vendor Optimized Gas Treating, the hands-on workshop looked at the use of process simulation software to design amine treatment units for carbon dioxide removal in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) production.

Adam also collected his 2013 Aungier Award for his paper entitled 'A New Process for Improved LNG Production Efficiency', delivered at the GPAE meeting in Edinburgh in 2013. The GPAE presents the prestigious annual award to the presenter of what is judged to be the best paper by a student or young professional at a GPAE conference during that year.

Said Adam: “The Young Professionals training session provided valuable insight into the design of a key gas treatment process. This was supported by the programme of technical papers from the rest of the conference, which aligned very well with the type of gas processing activity we carry out in Natural Resources. This also made the conference an excellent opportunity to network with other industry professionals from across Europe and talk about the innovative work Costain is doing in this industry.”
