Hydrogen advisory council working group

PRESS RELEASE

21 April 2021

Costain has secured important roles on a the Hydrogen Advisory Council Working Group and the Decarbonised Gas Alliance. These advisory groups support regional and national decarbonisation projects to deliver the Government’s net zero carbon vision and improve lives in communities. These appointments will enhance the work Costain is doing to develop, advise and accelerate the decarbonisation agenda including the deblending of hydrogen and our leading role in the South Wales Industrial Cluster.

Grant Johnson, Costain’s front end solution manager oil and gas has been appointed to the Standards and Regulations working group of the Hydrogen Advisory Council (HAC). The Council is the primary forum for BEIS engagement with industry and it seeks to identify and promote the actions needed to scaleup hydrogen use across the energy system. The Council is co-chaired by Kwasi Kwarteng, Minister of State for Business, Energy and Clean Growth, and Sinead Lynch, UK Country Chair of Shell.

Costain is also taking on the role of Chair and Secretariat of the Decarbonised Gas Alliance (DGA), an influential body representing over 50 organisations working together to decarbonise the gas system. Decarbonised gas aims to re-purpose the existing gas system by using a range of low carbon and renewable gases such as hydrogen to efficiently and cost effectively support the journey to net zero.

Rob Philips, energy sector director commented: “Costain is already supporting deep decarbonisation across the Humber, Teesside, Merseyside, Scotland, and Wales industrial clusters. This work coupled with our new advisory roles will enable us to drive decarbonisation more rapidly and support the Government and industry partners to devise a more focussed timetable that will accelerate the UK’s journey towards a achieving the objective of the UK being Net Zero by 2050. Grant’s role at HAC, in particular, will enhance industry representation in the development of this important roadmap.”

Chris Barron, Costain’s director of gas networks and storage, will be taking the role of Chair of the DGA on behalf of Costain and said,: “This is an important Alliance for the gas market which ensures a focus on the decarbonisation of heat, transport and industry. and supports the deployment of low carbon gas solutions that make best use of our existing infrastructure and enable quicker and cheaper decarbonisation.
