Costain Takes Centre Stage At Sustainability Conference

26 November 2013

Costain’s commitment to sustainability was showcased at the Sustainable Development Charter Annual Conference held in Cardiff recently.

The conference brought together representatives from more than 80 organisations , all keen to see the positive impact sustainable practices can make on customers and communities all over Wales. In August Costain signed up to the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Development Charter, joining 150  other organisations in making sustainability central to all they do.

Costain’s Bruce Richards, Project Director for the A465 Heads of the Valley road in South Wales, joined Peter Davies, Wales’s Commissioner for Sustainable Futures, on stage at the conference. He talked about what signing the Charter meant  to Costain and how sustainability is a cornerstone of Costain Cares – Costain’s commitment to meeting the needs of clients, communities, employees and stakeholders.

"I shared with other delegates how Costain Cares works at site level. On the A465 project for example, we’ve formed partnerships with local schools, set up apprenticeships and established a very proactive relationship with stakeholders such as local councils," said Bruce. "We will also be creating walkways to give people access to beauty spots along the route, and are carrying out extensive mitigation measures in what is a very environmentally sensitive area."

Darren James, Costain Managing Director, Infrastructure, also made an appearance at the conference in the form of a video, in which he talked about how Costain ensures sustainability is delivered at all levels of the business.

Bruce said the conference was a valuable opportunity for Costain to once again demonstrate its commitment to sustainability: “We showed that we are up there with the very best, that sustainability is embedded in our business. It’s not just an add-on – it’s what we do.”
