Costain Welsh Water wins top honours for Health and Safety

4 August 2011

The Costain team working on the Dwr Cymru Welsh Water Framework is celebrating after once again winning two top awards at the fifth annual DCWW Health and Safety Awards. The awards were presented at a glittering ceremony held at the Liberty Stadium, in Swansea.

For an unprecedented second consecutive year, the Costain team won the top 'Occupational Health and Safety Excellence Award' after beating intense competition from other companies working with Welsh Water.

The prize for winning the ‘Occupational Health and Safety Excellence Award’ is a charitable donation of £2,500 to a local charity. In light of this, the Costain team in north Wales intends to nominate worthwhile causes based in Wales.

The Excellence award was judged by an independent panel of Health and Safety Consultants who commented:

“Costain’s commitment to the continued development of its health and safety management systems is unwavering, and it has again taken health and safety risk management to a new level. Allied to this is Costain’s demonstration of active employee involvement throughout all aspects of its health and safety management process which is clearly having a positive impact upon its employees and partners. The Company should be recognised for its consistent and comprehensive commitment to health and safety and in particular its continued drive for continuous improvement.”

Additionally, Works Superintendant, Ray Dennis, was awarded first place in the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Health and Safety’ category. Commenting on Ray’s award, the judges said:

“Ray is a worthy winner as he shows commitment to the health and safety cause way above the call of duty. As well as carrying out his day to day role as Works Superintendant, Ray has actively taken on a mentoring role for other members of the construction team with particular focus on health and safety.”

John Madden, Costain Framework Director, said: “The Costain team at Welsh Water is delighted to once again be recognised by Welsh Water for our commitment to health and safety. In particular, I am really pleased for Ray that his efforts to promote the highest standards of health and safety have been recognised by a blue-chip client.”
