Some of Costain’s brightest graduates experienced ‘life at the top’ recently at a special Strategy Day.

The graduates, 23 in total, formed into five teams and had to present ideas for further improving the business to Andrew Wyllie, Costain Chief Executive, Tony Bickerstaff, Costain Finance Director, and Sally Austin, Costain Group HR Director.

The presenters, all participants in the Graduate Development Programme, were nominated by their line managers to take part. The five ideas were: Building on BIM (Building Information Modeling), Dealing with Stress, Bridging the Gap with Universities, Costain Central Training, and Project Paperless. The graduates had prepared for the Day over three months and the topics were developed into presentations during that time.

Said Sally: “The main aim of the Day was to help the graduates develop their presentation skills by giving them the opportunity to present to Executive Board members. But it also gave them the chance to work in a team comprising a range of ages and disciplines, and to gain valuable feedback not only from the directors but also their peers.”

All three directors were very impressed by the presentations. Said Sally: “ The teams produced five excellent presentations that covered not only the benefits to Costain but also commercial considerations and the impact on the customer. They displayed great passion and motivation, and also performed very well in the question and answer sessions following the presentations.”
