Focusing On Quality

8 June 2015

Quality Week at Costain begins today (Monday 8th June): a week-long programme of events at the Manchester offices designed to underline the quest for continual improvement.

Events include talks from John Parker, Head of Quality UK at Astra Zeneca and David Myers, Heathrow Airport Head of Quality, who will share insights on quality from their industries. There will also be input from Alex Vaughan, Managing Director, Costain Natural Resources; Fiona Ware, Costain Engineering & Operations Director; and Len Robinson, Quality Director - Costain Nuclear and Oil & Gas.

As Len Robinson explained, the aim of the week is to raise awareness of quality and its importance for continually raising performance.

“We will be focusing on three quality themes: delighting the customer; doing your work right first time, every time; and learning from successes and mistakes. So we have invited John Parker and David Myers who work in industries where we, as customers, all expect the highest, consistent quality.

“John has more than 30 years’ experience managing quality in the pharmaceutical sector. He has identified business risks and improved quality processes for several big names in the industry, including GSK, Novartis and AstraZeneca UK, where he now works. David is an engineer and programme manager with more than 40 years’ experience in the automotive and construction industries. He has worked for some of the biggest names in those industries, including Ford Motor Company, JCB Excavators and currently, Heathrow Ltd (previously BAA).

“They will be talking about how their respective industries achieved a step change in quality, and David will share changes in what they expect from contractors. We will look at how we can apply these concepts to Costain and what everyone in the Division can do to continually improve performance.”

The week will also include a quality quiz and suggestion scheme, and there will be further quality awareness activities in the Division’s other offices in the coming weeks.
