Innovation For Award Winning Training

18 February 2015

Costain is using a simulated management and leadership training competition as part of its award winning Graduate Development Programme.

The competition is called ENGINUITY and was first used by Costain last year as part of its Director 15 Talent Development Programme. Due to its success, the Company is using it again as an integral part of its graduate scheme.

ENGINUITY gives participants specific business tasks which tests and hones their financial and teamwork building skills, such as devising a strategy, identifying and winning new work in different sectors, improve profitability and expanding the infrastructure of a business to achieve growth.

“Due to the success of ENGINUITY last year, we are integrating it as a key module in our Graduate Development Programme. ENGINUITY gives participants an opportunity to develop their management skills and to use the core business competencies they have acquired from the Graduate Development Scheme , bringing it all together into running a global construction contracting business in a competitive simulated environment,” said Camilla Duncan, Costain’s Graduate Development Officer.

Teams work across different countries and markets, which carry different risks and challenges like client restrictions, global competition and environmental issues. Performance is assessed based on 10 key performance indicators, including operating profit, contract completions, forward workload, margin, client satisfaction and share price performance.

In June, participants will take part in a live final, where the ten graduate teams will compete directly against each other. Last year’s winning team, the Sky Blues, included D15 members Ros Parker as Chief Executive, Ben Howard as Operations Director and Chris Turner as Work Winning Director.

“ENGINUITY offers a very different, practical approach to learning about how to run a business. It gives you some valuable insights into the importance of strategy, targeting sustainable and profitable markets from day one, and building customer relationships through repeat business. The time pressure and the competitive spirit between the teams also made it really exciting,” said Ros.
