Safety Critical Medicals For Costain Supply Chain

23 December 2011

Sub Contractors on one of Costain’s water frameworks are benefiting from occupational health checks in new medical facilities.

The Finham Sewage Treatment Works, on the Severn Trent Framework in Warwickshire, is the venue for the Supply Chain to receive safety critical worker medical assessments.  This enables the supply chain to comply with the Group’s safety critical medical policy for safety critical trades, such as those working in confined spaces, at height without collective fall protection and high speed road workers.

The assessments are facilitated by Occupational Health Consultants, K2 Associates, and, since the beginning of November 2011, 50 Supply Chain subcontractors have received safety critical worker medicals.  Towards the end of the AMP5 framework 500 - 1000 people are expected to receive a medical assessment.

The Company, K2 Associates, was selected to carry out the checks as it had a proven track record working on the M1 Junction 10-13 Improvements Scheme.

Simon Cox, Framework SHE Manager, on the Severn Trent Water scheme, said: “The Block Schemes Delivery team has done an excellent job of facilitating the Safety Critical Assessments for our supply chain with superb medical facilities at our Finham offices.

“A number of occupational health issues have been picked up during these assessments with people being referred back to their own GPs with issues such as high blood pressure, high Body Mass Index and occupational dermatitis. Any process which raises the awareness of occupational health and wellbeing in the construction industry can only have a positive outcome.”

The safety critical worker health screening is a further example of how the Costain Cares initiative is being implemented within the Group.
