Safety Landmark Achieved On The Roads

23 January 2013

A-one+*, a Costain joint venture, has announced the achievement of a major safety landmark on the Highways Agency’s Area 12 which covers the strategic roads network across Yorkshire, Humberside and North Lincolnshire.

Recently, Area 12 reached the significant milestone of one million hours worked without a reportable lost time incident, an accolade that few in our industry can claim and is a first for Area 12. At the time of writing the figure is now 1.4 million hours.

Brian Statham, General Manager for A-one+ in Area 12, said: "This is a significant milestone that few in our industry can claim and is a first for Area 12.  This is a remarkable achievement for a Highways Agency managing agent contract (MAC) when put into perspective - a 'site' over 1,200km long, the majority of works at night and adjacent to live high speed traffic, hundreds of individual schemes and thousands of people involved over the period including our own staff and workers such as sub contractors in our supply chain."

The Area 12 MAC team has been congratulated by Roger Wantling, Service Delivery Team Leader for the Highways Agency.

Mr Wantling said: "The health and safety of everyone who works and travels on our network within Area 12 is of the highest importance. To hear that we have achieved one million hours worked without a RIDDOR in October 2012 after eight months without a single reportable accident is tremendous news. I am also aware that such a landmark could not have been achieved without the dedication to health and safety from everyone involved.

"In particular, I would like to praise our colleagues on the frontline, who often have to work in difficult and potentially dangerous conditions out on the network to make it as safe and operational as possible for our customers. Without their commitment such a landmark could certainly not have been achieved.   This is certainly a significant achievement for Area 12 and long may it continue."

A-one+ is celebrating the landmark by presenting to the staff specially commissioned soft shell jackets with an appropriate logo detailing the achievement.

A-one+ has also recently been highly commended at the recent Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards in London.  The international panel of judges commented that the company's road safety initiatives including a Road Worker Safety Radio Campaign which has run across Yorkshire and the North East and other initiatives “showed sound, simple thinking with a systematic approach” that made an “outstanding contribution to improving road safety.”
