Sharing The Knowledge

13 November 2014

Costain’s surveying community met to swap knowledge, ideas and new practices in the annual Land and Engineering Surveyors Knowledge Share Event.

Organised by Dean Bain, Land and Engineering Survey Manager, and held this year at Staverton Park, Daventry, the event allows Costain’s Engineering Surveying community (the modern term for land surveying) to get together. The nature of their work means that surveyors and technicians tend to work in small teams on projects throughout the group and this session is a great internal networking opportunity.

“The idea is to meet up to see what new things people are doing,” said Surveying Manager, Stephen Diver. “We ask ‘What are you working on, what does and doesn’t work and what lessons have been learned?’”  Thus enabling the community to upskill based on collective experiences.

As well as the 30 or so Costain specialists in the field, subcontractors and key supply chain members were also invited to share their skills and new techniques. Clients were also invited to give their input.

Usually, the event is focused around a series of presentations by members of the team on their innovations and case studies. This year, the organisers cast the net wider, asking junior members of the team to come up with an innovation.

Presentations covered a wide range of topics, including:

• The role of the engineering surveyor in the new world of BIM;

• in-house Laser scanning capabilities and the ability to deliver cloud data direct to designers for modelling;

• presentations from Senceive and Utterberry  on wireless mesh network sensors for monitoring applications.
