Sydenham School Is Top Of The Class

Team Seeks Low-Carbon Supply Chain

Costain’s rebuilding of Sydenham School has won a gold award in the Considerate Constructors’ Scheme annual site awards.

The £25 million project involved the construction of a new STEM (Science, Technology, Electronics and Mathematics) and Arts block, just metres from the existing, operational school. It also included the refurbishment of a two-storey Edwardian building and the demolition of a four-storey building. The project was completed in March this year, making it the last school to be completed as part of Lewisham Council’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.

The judges praised the Costain site team for working closely with the school to ensure the least disruption possible and making sure that the local community was kept fully informed.

They added: “Beyond this, arrangements were made to make the works a learning experience for the pupils, evidenced by a number of site visits and presentations explaining the various activities. In the wider community there were several examples of goodwill gestures carried out, together with participation in job fairs and regular neighbour newsletters.”

Exceptional appearance standards and a clear demonstration of company values helped convey an excellent impression of the industry to the school as well as to passers-by. There was also “first-rate” provision for operatives, and exemplary safety arrangements. They all added up to, said the judges, “a considerate performance ranking among the country’s best.”

Said Eddie McKenna, Costain Senior Project Manager: “I am very pleased that our team has received this award. It is not only a reflection of their hard work throughout the project but, more importantly, their incredibly helpful and courteous attitude to everyone on site, at the school and the local residents. It has been a pleasure to work with them all.”

Commented Mike Petter, CCS Chairman: “It is our privilege to reward the efforts of all those involved in projects which set the bar in terms of considerate construction. We never fail to be impressed each year by the high levels of innovation and excellence evidenced throughout the industry.

“Each award-winning project serves as a shining example to the industry as to what can be achieved across a range of different sized projects and in all sectors of the industry. “
