Costain’s Mehmood Alam, Senior Project Engineer in the Natural Resources Division, has won the prestigious International Project Management Association (IPMA) Young Project Manager of the Year Award 2014.

IPMA President Mladen Radujkovic presented Mehmood with his award at the 28th IPMA World Congress in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The award is open to project managers aged between 18 and 35 and recognises outstanding performance in delivery and management of projects. Judging is based on the IPMA’s Competence Baseline (ICB), which comprises 46 competencies covering both technical and professional abilities.

“I was very pleased to win – it’s a great honour,” said Mehmood, who is currently providing design coordination and project engineering support on Costain’s National Grid FEED contract. “The IPMA is the world’s largest professional project management body, so this is recognition on an international scale.

Manchester-based Mehmood encourages other young project managers to join the IPMA and enter for the award and IPMA certification programmes.  He said: “It’s a good platform on which to build your career.”

Commented Steve Thornton, Manager of Project Engineering: “Mehmood joined Costain’s project delivery team in October 2013 and since then has made a big impression within the Company on the National Grid FEED contract, providing strong support and leadership to the Project Engineering Manager (PEM).

“Mehmood has a development programme in place at Costain with a view to reaching the role of PEM, which I am sure he will achieve. He is an enthusiastic and dedicated individual who has helped to raise the profile of the project engineering team within Costain. His experiences will also help the junior members of the team with their career development. We are extremely proud of Mehmood’s achievement.”
