Trainee Receives Top Sports Award

15 July 2014

A Costain trainee accountant has received two prestigious sport awards at the Principality Building Society Premiership Awards dinner in Cardiff.

Geraint Walsh is in the second year of an accounting apprenticeship working with the A465 Heads of the Valleys team in Cardiff.  He plays full back for Pontypridd in the Principality Welsh Rugby Premiership and has  won the ‘Player of the Year Award’ along with a second award for scoring the ’Try of the Year’.

The awards follow a very successful season for Pontypridd RFC who won the Principality Premiership and the SWALEC cup.

Bruce Richards, a Project Director for Costain, said: "Geraint has had to balance his spare time between training and maintaining his fitness for his role as a top level full back and progressing his studies toward becoming an accountant. I am pleased to say he is achieving success in both fields and we are all very proud at Costain of his awards and achievements this season."

Geraint Walsh said: "I feel very proud to have received the awards and I am very grateful to my employers and work colleagues at Costain for their support and encouragement. It is difficult sometimes balancing the pressures of playing premiership rugby and etching out a longer term career, but the hard work seems to be paying off."

Notes to the Editor

Costain is the principal contractor appointed by the Welsh Government to deliver Section 2 of the A465 Heads of the Valley widening project between Gilwern and Brynmawr. The project is currently awaiting a report following a ‘Public Inquiry’ with an anticipated start date in October this year.

Geraint was also selected recently to represent Wales in the Twickenham 7’s in the final leg of the IRB World series.

Geraint is 26 years of age living in Pontypridd and is currently working on Level 4 of a QCF accounting technician qualification with KAPLAN in Cardiff.
