Literacy support for school children

At Paddington Crossrail, we are investing time and money into the local community by delivering guided reading support to disadvantaged students from a nearby highly challenged school.

Raising literacy levels is a national and local priority, nowhere more so than in the City of Westminster. At Hallfield School there is a high percentage of pupils who have English as a second language (60%), of which 80% are eligible for free school breakfasts, demonstrating a significant level of disadvantaged young people within the Paddington area of Westminster.

"Reading is a skill used in every area of the curriculum and without having a grasp of this basic skill, children will face challenges with their education. By investing in young people we can help ensure that we have a sustainable supply of local talent for our business."

Catherine Warbrick, Costain’s Corporate Responsibility and Investor Relations Director

Since 2012, we have delivered approximately 400 hours of guided reading support to students of Hallfield Primary School. In addition to this, 30 of our employees also volunteered to transform the school’s bathroom facilities with £1,500 worth of materials donated from the project.
