The Dimlington gas processing terminal, acquired by Perenco in 2012, uses refrigeration units to chill gas during processing to ensure the sales gas product meets the required specification for the national gas transmission system. The units used a refrigerant which was being phased out due to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

Costain was chosen to work closely with the client to execute the re-appraisal (pre-FEED) study. Our preferred option met all the technical criteria as well as providing a robust, fit-for-purpose business solution aligned to client’s strategy to extend the asset life, improve operating efficiency and optimise capital expenditure.

This is an example of how customers benefit from collaborative engagement with our front end specialists in the early stages of a project; the capital cost of our solution was 60% less than an alternative proposal.

Delivery to schedule and budget

Following our initial proposal and concept, Costain continued working with Perenco on further project definition through delivering a FEED study. This was followed by the award of the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management contract (EPCM), which was delivered on schedule and to budget; with Environment Agency compliance achieved in December 2014, and project completion in December 2015.

In December 2015, the project was recognised by the prestigious IChemE Global Awards, winning the coveted Industry Project Award.

Costain’s capabilities and positive approach to working closely with Perenco have resulted in a substantial reduction in scope and cost for the project compared to that produced by the previous asset owners. The novel bespoke solution has been a testament to the strengths of both companies’ knowledge and expertise and a desire to produce enhanced environmental and business results.
