Dedicated Community Relations Manager
The treatment works was sunk into the landscape to minimise its visual impact and protect key views of the South Downs - vital to securing planning permission after a decade of delays.
To deliver on time and budget, we developed the project programme in a web-based environment. The client could access the system and get the same information that we were using – a true collaborative approach.
Costain and its 4Delivery partners, Veolia and MWH, worked together as a single team to deliver this flagship project. The scheme is Southern Water’s largest ever project and includes 11km of new sewer tunnel, two pumping stations, a 2.5km long sea outfall and a £300 million wastewater treatment works, featuring Europe’s largest curved green roof.
Southern Water’s ‘Cleaner Seas for Sussex’ project has picked up many awards including Major Civil Engineering Project of the Year at the British Construction Industry Awards (beating The London 2012 Olympic Park Project) and the 2013 ICE Brassey Award for the best civil engineering project in Kent and East Sussex.

The team, including everyone who works for our supplier 4Delivery and the various specialist sub-contractors, has been superb and helped deliver our biggest ever scheme on time and on budget.
