European carbon capture and storage design verification
Statoil and the Norwegian Government entered an agreement to provide a demonstration plant at Mongstad to investigate carbon capture in a two stage process. Costain carried out a verification exercise of the initial design.
Challenges
100,000 metric tonnes/year CO2
Simulation
Costain provided design verification services by assessment of the following:
- Process simulations for the flue gas pre-treatment
- Flue gas cyclone design
- Residue Catalytic Cracker (RCC) and Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHP) gas blowers
- RCC and CHP direct contact coolers
- RCC and CHP cooling water heat exchangers
- RCC and CHP re-circulating cooling water pumps
- The control and shutdown philosophy for the flue gas system
Costain provided the following customer benefits:
- Confidence in the overall process design
- Verification of the equipment performance
- Confirmation that required gas specification into the CCS equipment was met
