Following completion of a successful Front End Engineering Design [FEED] project, Costain was awarded a contract by National Grid to upgrade its Peterborough and Huntingdon compressor stations. The primary driver for the programme is to reduce emissions associated with moving gas around the UK to support EU legislation; added benefits include increased system resilience and reduced overall risk on the National Transmission System by replacing aging assets with modern, efficient equipment.
As both compressors are adjacent on the National Transmission Service, they cannot be taken out of service at the same time. The Costain team has devised a complex delivery programme to minimise any impact on the NTS and avoid outages during the winter months. This will ensure National Grid’s customers are provided with a seamless service during the project and will benefit from a much enhanced supply when it is completed.
Integrated Programme Delivery Solution [IPDS]
Developed and proven on 30+ projects in multiple sectors, Costain’s Integrated Programme Delivery Solution (IPDS) embraces information management and project controls to bring people, processes and high-end technology together for efficient and effective management of programmes.
The IPDS data warehouse seamlessly consolidates key metrics and KPIs for deliverables, planning and scheduling and cost management with other integral processes such as technical assurance of the detailed design and a unique integration of the E3D model development consolidated progress updates.
Following rapid deployment during programme mobilisation on the compressor stations, the Costain team is benefiting from a high visibility approach with validated and authentic real-time information on progress, performance and forecasts, all of which informs external client reports.
The result is effective communication, decision making and input to progress meetings and stage gate reviews that maintain predictability and are promoting successful programme delivery.
