Reducing the volume of legacy waste

Evaporator D will provide replacement capacity for the Sellafield’s existing evaporators; these play a pivotal role in safely cleaning up the site by reducing its nuclear inventories.

From beach to site

The modules were transported across the River Ehen on a temporary bridge, then over the Barrow to Carlisle rail lines before being installed in the evaporator building using a purpose-built gantry system.

Community engagement

We hosted a bridge building event at Lakes College where 240 children were given a fun introduction into the challenges of civil engineering at no cost to their schools.

A key challenge for the project was the location of the evaporator building – next to an operational facility and on a restricted footprint. This made it difficult to build this complex plant in situ.

To address this challenge, we developed a strategy to construct the plant in 15 modules, which were pre-fabricated and tested off-site. Because many of the modules were too big to transport on Cumbria’s road network, we worked with Sellafield to devise a plan to get the modules to the site by sea.

This phase of the project presented us with a unique logistical challenge, and all the parties involved are proud of the fact that we have successfully and safely delivered this module to a site of this size and complexity.

Evaporator D will be used to concentrate highly-active raffinate produced during reprocessing and to process effluent from the Waste Vitrification Plant (WVP) at Sellafield. Once concentrated through evaporation, the resulting product is called highly-active liquor (HAL). This is stored prior to vitrification, which immobilises the waste in glass for long-term storage and eventual disposal.

This first ever delivery of a major component to the beach is the culmination of lots of hard work by a great team of people. We are all very proud of our accomplishment.
