Costain professionals achieve ICE Fellowship

FICE

18 January 2024

Costain professionals have been awarded The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Fellowship, the highest grade of membership and a globally recognised mark of professional excellence. It is awarded in recognition of the significant contribution engineers have made to the profession and is an endorsement of leadership knowledge, skills and experience.

Business systems and risk manager, Kath Sanders, is one of Costain’s new ICE Fellows. Working in the roads sector, she was encouraged to apply for Fellowship due to her role in continuous professional development of others and the wider profession. “I feel very honoured to have been accepted as a Fellow of the ICE, to be recognised by my peers and leaders of the industry as having made a significant contribution to civil engineering,” Kath says. “Since becoming a Fellow, I have been asked to speak at the ICE Connects: Women in Fellowship hybrid event, an event that I attended last year and gave me the confidence to apply for the Fellowship. This event allows women and industry allies to unite and explore the importance of diversity across the industry.”

Costain has supported the new Fellows in their applications as part of their career development. Andrew Threlfall, Costain’s group chief engineer, said, “At Costain, we place great importance on personal and professional growth and developing all our people to be the best they can be. That’s why in 2023 we established a FICE cohort and supported them to achieve their Fellowship, and we will do so again this year. At the same time, we have ambitious growth plans, and we are always looking for talented people to join our teams from all disciplines, so I would encourage anyone interested in a fulfilling career to take a look at our vacancies.”

Craig Reade, complex delivery capability director in Costain’s water sector, has also been accepted as a Fellow of the ICE. “It’s an honour to be amongst those that have achieved the highest level of membership of the ICE,” Craig said. “To be recognised and considered amongst a peer group of world class engineers that have made a difference to society is a real privilege.”

A key element of the civil engineering profession is leading on safety. As Paul Williams, civil and structural technical authority commented, “I’m privileged to join a group of distinguished engineers recognised for directing significant civil engineering projects. FICE is awarded to professionals who demonstrate leadership, knowledge and skills and through Costain’s approach to eliminating harm through leadership, I will continue to apply these traits to our major infrastructure projects.”

As well as developing people’s expertise in safety, Costain is demonstrating its commitment to health and safety best practice by again co-hosting this year’s

It will be co-chaired by professor Anusha Shah, President of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and Sam White, Costain’s managing director of natural resources. Industry experts sharing their knowledge and experience include Stuart Hughes, head of health and safety, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team and IOSH president, who will explore how they have used leading indicators in the cutting-edge sector of Formula 1.
