Costain, appointed contractor for the Heysham to M6 Link Road, hosted a Cycle Safety Awareness Day recently.

The event took place at the Halton Road site and gave cyclists and the attending public an opportunity to sit in a Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) to observe driver’s blind spots and understand what they can see on the road. There was also a team on hand from Lancashire Police carrying out security stamping on bicycles.

Costain Safety, Health and Environment Manager, Nicola Uijen said: “Children as well as parents were given an incredible opportunity to sit behind the wheel of LGV’s such as stone wagons, and dump-trucks capable of carrying 40 tonnes of earth to find out what the drivers see when they’re driving."

Traffic management controls such as barriers, cones and signs have become a regular feature on the local roads since the project started in January. With more major roadworks due to start on the roundabout at the junction of Morecambe Road and the A683 (end of Heysham Bypass) from 1st June 2014, Costain want to raise awareness of road safety to both the general public; whether on foot, bike or in a vehicle, and roadworkers themselves.

Community Relations Officer, Tom Horton, said: “We plan to host more events like this in the future and continue engaging with the local community. With the Visitor Centre open Mondays (1-5pm), Wednesdays (3-7pm) and Fridays (8-1pm), members of the public are welcome to come and speak with us about the construction of the road.”

Parent Gabi Crossley, who brought her two year old son Logan to the event, said: “Great staff, great video of the road and amazing experience for little and 'big' kids. We’ve been in a 40 tonne dumptruck, which are the ones you see all over the job at the minute.”
