Double Accolade At Heathrow

14 February 2013

The Costain team working on contracts at London’s main airport has won recognition for its commitment to health and safety with two awards at the first Heathrow Development Safety Awards ceremony.

Its efforts were rewarded with the team taking top slot in ‘Health – Campaigns/Initiatives’, while it also picked up a Highly Commended ranking in the ‘Approach to Behavioural Safety’ category.

It won the Health category by putting together a SHE calendar entitled ‘Costain Cares Month’ for November 2012. This focused on a series of topics, including abrasive wheels, winter working and cancer awareness. The last of these saw a nurse from MacMillan Cancer Support visiting the site and holding one-to-one sessions with both on-site staff and office workers.

The judges applauded Costain for what they described as a number of good health initiatives throughout the month that had been aimed at making its workforce aware of health and wellbeing issues, together with the potential effects of their working environment and lifestyle choices.

They also commended the Company’s “very high quality” submission in the behavioural safety category, the training for which set out to identify in simple, straightforward terms how personnel were encouraged to ‘do the right thing’ when it came to safety because they wanted to, not because they had to.

“The Awards represent a good year of hard work in development,” said Costain’s Operations Director, Joe Kemm. “We were very pleased – overjoyed, in fact – to get this recognition marking our commitment to Safety, Health and Environment on Heathrow’s Projects and Solutions.”

The Awards are destined to become an annual event.
