Early Completion For Costain

27 January 2012

Costain has reached practical completion and handover of St George’s Hospital, in Lincoln, for the Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Trust two weeks ahead of schedule.

Costain was appointed on the Procure 21 framework contract as main contractor to demolish and redevelop the Yarborough Court area of the hospital, and to construct a new facility, Discovery House, on the same grounds.

The new building will act as a Rehabilitation Unit comprising separate male and female high dependency wards and a medium dependency mixed gender ward.  Work commenced on 18 October 2010 and was completed two weeks ahead of schedule on 28 November 2011. Handover was scheduled to take place on 12 December 2011. The design and build project had a total contract value of £11.5million and covered a gross internal floor area of 4000m2.

The locality of the hospital and the footprint of the building hindered both access to and manoeuvrability around the site and provided several challenges to the team. The team had to ensure the safety of existing patients and allow for deliveries to the hospital to continue as normal. The site was also bordered on three sides by local residents, which meant having to work very closely with the Trust to address any issues and concerns that the local residents had.

Commenting on the project, Kevin Miners, the Project Manager, said: “We couldn’t have completed this project as successfully as we did without the help and cooperation of the client, Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Trust. If any issue arose, we worked very closely with the Trust to resolve those issues jointly, which included liaising with local residents, organising communal letter drops and organising public reference groups to offer guided tours of the site.”

Len Hartley, Capital Projects Manager for Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Trust, said: “Costain and its team have demonstrated once again why it is one of the leading contractors in the industry.  Its approach to this project has been excellent from start to finish.  The care, consideration and attention to detail has been exceptional and the team has delivered a high quality building on budget, two weeks earlier than anticipated and in a safe and thoroughly professional manner.”

Ann Dodd, Clinical Lead for Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Trust, said: “The project has been a great success and everyone involved has demonstrated true partnership based on mutual respect. As a result, we have a beautiful building that has exceeded our expectations and will provide a modern, safe and therapeutic environment for patients to recover in.”
