Top Honours For Innovative Safety Technology

13 December 2011

Costain, as part of A-One+, a joint venture with Halcrow and Colas, recently scooped a top award at the Highways Magazine Excellence Awards 2011, in London, for its work in developing innovative technology that improves the safety of road maintenance contractors.

The team won the Highway Worker and Site Safety Initiative Award for helping, in association with Highway Resource Solutions, to develop the Intellicone work zone perimeter alarm, an integrated safety solution that transforms ordinary temporary road barriers like traffic cones into an electronic safety perimeter.

Trialled by the A-one+ Errant Vehicles Working Group, the patented Intellicone Technology is based on a wireless sensor network that enables automatic detection of a cone barrier breach which automatically activates an audio-visual site alarm system. The alarm gives roadside workers an instant warning that a work zone perimeter has been breached and allows workers to take evasive action.

The awards at the Royal Garden Hotel in London on October 12 recognise and celebrate excellence and innovation within the highways sector. The awards are in association with and judged by the Highways Agency and the Department for Transport. The team also received the special merit award as a “Winner of Winners” for the same product.

Commenting on the award to A-One+, the judges said: "Intellicone is a good example of the use of technology to aid safety through increasing warning to road workers.”

Peter Fisher, Costain’s Group SHE Director, said: “Costain and the A-One+ team are delighted to have won this award which demonstrates how teamwork and utilising best practice can lead to developing innovative solutions in the work environment.”
