Meet Antonio, Pipelines Discipline Manager, delivering engineering projects in our Energy sector.
Antonio helps deliver and maintain safe and reliable infrastructure that supports the UK's energy transition and protects the critical pipeline system for future generations.
What led you to a career at Costain?
"I was drawn to Costain because of the opportunity to work on nationally significant infrastructure projects that will have a lasting impact on the environment and communities across the UK. Pipeline engineering combines technical problem-solving, multi-discipline collaboration, and innovation, which is fully aligned with my interests and professional experience. Costain is at the forefront of pipeline decarbonisation projects, including the design of pipelines for carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and hydrogen transportation infrastructure, helping shape the UK's transition to a low-carbon future. Costain's reputation for delivering complex infrastructure safely and sustainably, while investing in its people through professional development opportunities, made it the ideal place to continue building a meaningful and rewarding career."
How does your role contribute to improving people's lives?
"My role helps deliver and maintain safe and reliable pipeline infrastructure that supports the UK's energy transition and protects the critical pipeline system for future generations, safeguarding people and the environment. A key part of my work has focused on designing and delivering infrastructure for hydrogen and carbon dioxide transportation, which will play an important role in reducing industrial emissions, supporting a lower-carbon economy and driving decarbonisation. I have also been involved in pipeline life extension initiatives. These projects reduce environmental risk, improve long-term reliability, and provide sustainable, cost-effective solutions that benefit communities, the natural environment and the industry."
What is your biggest professional achievement and why?
"My biggest professional achievements have come from mentoring and developing junior engineers into confident project leaders and pipeline consultants. I'm particularly proud of building a high-performing, collaborative team culture where people from different backgrounds feel supported to grow and to make a tangible contribution to the organisation and to the UK. Seeing my colleagues grow in their careers while delivering high-quality engineering solutions has a lasting impact on both project performance and team morale."
What do you enjoy most about working at Costain?
"What I enjoy most about working at Costain is the collaborative culture and shared sense of purpose across the business. People genuinely support one another and are committed to delivering positive outcomes for clients, communities, and the environment."
What has inspired you during your time at Costain?
"Working alongside highly skilled professionals across multiple disciplines has inspired me to think more strategically and embrace innovative ways of delivering engineering solutions, including most recently investigating the application of AI to the design and integrity management of pipeline systems. I've also been inspired by Costain's commitment to sustainability and social value, demonstrating how infrastructure projects can create benefits beyond construction by positively impacting communities, the environment, and future generations."
What advice would you give someone starting out in their career?
"Be curious and don't be afraid to ask questions. Take every opportunity to learn from the people around you. Building strong relationships and understanding how different disciplines work together is just as important as the technical knowledge within your own discipline. Most importantly, stay adaptable and focused on continuous development because engineering and infrastructure are constantly evolving industries."
