Meet Cameron, a quality engineer in our defence and nuclear energy sector.
Cameron believes that the role of quality professionals is to make people think about getting things right first time.
What led you to your career at Costain?
"I come from a family of quality professionals, and I have always had an interest in what they do. I’ve always found the nuclear energy and defence industry interesting and to be able to support the country in defence, gives me a lot of pride."
How does your role contribute to improving people’s lives?
"Overall, I believe through being a quality engineer, we improve people’s lives by giving each person on a project a voice and the right to speak up if something isn’t right.
"A key part of my role is to make sure teams are following the correct procedures and drawings as well as providing a route for raising issues so that they can be resolved quickly with minimal impact."
What’s your biggest professional achievement and why?
"One of the biggest achievements as a quality function on my current project has been how we have changed the culture to a Quality culture. Changing culture can be difficult with a big customer but we have managed to bring change and introduce a positive quality culture for our customer and supply chain partners."
What do you enjoy most about working at Costain?
"What I most enjoy about working at Costain is feeling like a real team and family at work. The quality team in the defence and nuclear energy sector is spread all over the country but we're always keeping in contact and asking for advice from one another and sharing lessons learnt across the sector."
What have you learned / what has inspired you during your time at Costain?
"Over the last four years I’ve gained a lot of knowledge about auditing and how to identify risks to projects and help support the supply chain before the risk occurs. The quality team have been key in inspiring me to get better each day. They are always looking to improve the quality team and bring the next generation through."
What advice would you give to someone starting out in their career?
"I think the best advice I was given was to always be open to change and be open to learning."
